The Above + Beyond Cancer Transformational Journey to African begins on June 13, when the group
will leave Des Moines and fly to Nairobi, Kenya, where they will work with the American Cancer Society
on the first-ever international Hope Hostel, which serves the Kenyatta National Hospital cancer patients and their families. Visiting Oncology patients at Kenyatta National Hospital will also be part of this three-day medical mission. On the final night in Nairobi, Above + Beyond Cancer will sponsor a Survivors Forum and Dinner, highlighting medical advances in cancer treatments and spotlighting both African and American survivors.
The group will begin their Kilimanjaro adventure following an in-country flight from Nairobi, Kenya to
Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. The seven day, fully guided trek will feature hiking in diverse climates and ever-
changing geography, taking the climbers from near sea level to heights beyond 19,000 feet in elevation.
Hikers will experience tropical rainforests and shrubland where a range of flora and fauna species are
found. Ultimately, the group will reach the Uhuru Peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340 feet), where they will
enjoy the sun rising over the African landscape, casting a pink hue over the snowy peak and making the glaciers sparkle like diamonds.
Following this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, the group will depart Africa on June 25 and head back
home, arriving in Des Moines after an overnight flight on June 26.
All applications are due at Midnight on Monday, December 23. Applicants will be notified of their status on or before Friday, January 10, 2020.
Those accepted into the Africa Journey will begin their group training sessions on Monday, April 6.
Costs for this Transformational Journey are still being determined. It is estimated that costs will be
between $8,000 – $9,000 per person. There will be a scholarship available and Above + Beyond Cancer
will help in guiding participants in fundraising.
