Get ready for our Transformational Journey to Utah

The next Above + Beyond Cancer Transformational Journey will be to Utah from August 29 to September 5!  We will fly from Des Moines to Salt Lake City then camp and hike in two National Parks as well as visit a National Monument. Our camping and hiking will start in Bryce Canyon National Park, which is a geologic wonder and home to the world’s greatest collection of sandstone spires known as Hoodoos. We will then explore a beautiful area of Southern Utah called Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, before heading into Zion National Park to do one of the world’s most unique and incredible hikes – The Narrows!

The itinerary will include about 35 miles of hiking over the six-day period. The entire trek will be fully supported by a highly regarded outfitting company that will provide all of our meals, and nearly all of the camping gear you will need. The team will get prepared for this journey through a 12-week training program designed and led by Above + Beyond Cancer’s Program Director Mary Van Heukelom.

This will be a tent camping adventure, with each campsite being used as a “base camp” so there will be “day hikes” where team members will be asked to carry day packs rather than full backpacks. Each hike will be led by trained guides, who are experts in the trails and pathways of these beautiful Utah sanctuaries.

Each day will start with a bit of Yoga and Meditation led by Mary Van Heukelom to get our day started off right.  Evenings will be devoted to programs and activities lead by Above + Beyond Cancer’s Founder Dr. Richard Deming.

The Utah Team is limited to just 20 participants and, like all Above + Beyond Cancer happenings, it is open to all adult cancer survivors and caregivers.

Applications to become a member of the Above + Beyond Cancer Utah Team are available here. The application deadline is May 1. The total cost for the Utah Journey is $3,000. There are need-based scholarships available as well as fundraising opportunities. If you have questions please contact Executive Director Chris Goodale at or 515-770-1426.
