Full-time Director of Development + Outreach

Above + Beyond Cancer is a non-profit based in Des Moines, Iowa, founded in 2011, by Oncologist Richard L. Deming, MD. The mission of this dynamic organization is to elevate the lives of those touched by cancer, to create a healthier world. The Director of Development and Outreach will play a critical role in driving this vibrant entity to even greater heights. Reporting to the Executive Director, this unique professional experience provides a rewarding opportunity for the correct professional. Above + Beyond Cancer’s efforts are very team oriented as the staff works closely with volunteers to do an outstanding job of delivering our programs to the cancer community. The ideal applicant will possess:

  • A positive attitude and embrace our mind, body, spirit approach to cancer survivorship
  • Strong communication and writing skills, as well as exceptional focus on detail 
  • Significant experience in professional fundraising
  • The drive to be a “self-starter” in order to initiate fundraising, community and media contacts
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • A high level of understanding of databases, software programs and communication technology 

Responsibilities for the Director of Development and Outreach include, but are not limited to:

Fundraising – Our organization is funded solely through gift and grant income; therefore, it is imperative that this person do an outstanding job of stewarding our current donors and constantly work to bring new donors into the fold. The fundraising responsibilities include:

  • Making 75 – 100 personal fundraising contacts during the year and guiding those prospects through the complete donor process through major gifts, planned giving and monthly giving
  • Expanding the donor base through new fundraising programs and writing grant applications 
  • Managing the fundraising database (Little Green Light) and donor software program (Classy)
  • Carrying-out the Year-End Fundraising effort and helping to create an Annual Report each year

Hotel Program – in the fall of 2020, Above + Beyond Cancer took-up the Hotel Program, which provides complimentary hotel rooms to cancer patients in need during their cancer treatment. Duties include:

  • Establishing and maintaining a group of participating hotels
  • Coordinating with patients, caregivers, nurse navigators and doctors on nights needed and stays 

Merchandise Management – the dual purpose of Above + Beyond Cancer merchandise is to get our image out in the community as well as fortify our financial position. Duties include:

  • Mailing all books that are order through our website or Amazon
  • Coordinating and capturing merchandise sales during all events and activities

Outreach Communication – creating video podcasts are a key way in which Above + Beyond Cancer has distributed our educational messages to the cancer community. Creating, promoting and “producing” our weekly Cancer Education Series video podcast is a key fixture in this process. Outreach also includes:

  • Using our Constant Contact account to inform our 6,000 constituents on Above + Beyond Cancer happenings and upcoming events/activities
  • Dropping regular news releases and aggressively connecting with media contacts to get our information to local, regional and possibly national media outlets

Administration – because this is a small professional team, a measure of administrative duties are required for this position.
