The Benefits of Yoga4Cancer

In this week’s episode of the Cancer Education Series, Dr. Richard Deming welcomes Alyson Matney. Alyson is a certified Yoga4Cancer instructor with a long background in leading group fitness. She and Dr. Deming discuss how the mind-body aspect of yoga changed her own life, and the impact Yoga4Cancer has on patients with cancer.

Alyson explains why she prefers yoga over other physical movement classes, “Exercise is always good for us, but if you can incorporate breath, body, and mind connection into movement it is life changing.” Matney’s own yoga journey was one influenced by cancer. In 2013, her father passed away from small cell lung cancer. She was his primary caretaker during his journey, so she was familiar with the side effects of his treatment. Alyson used Yoga to help herself through that difficult time period, and attempted to help her dad with yoga as well. Once her dad’s journey was complete she then decided to take her love for yoga and share that with other cancer survivors and caregivers.

Matney discusses what Yoga4Cancer is, and how it differs from a regular yoga class. She explains it is a methodology based on science and research, backed by oncology and renowned medical institutes. It is based on Vinyasa yoga, which emphasizes breath-to-movement and bringing balance to all systems in your body. All movements are done with survivors in mind, with modifications and props to support students.

Alyson touts the benefits of improved range of motion, muscular strength, and the mind-body connection. She explains that anyone can derive these benefits, regardless of their stage in their cancer journey. She shares that she has had people in her classes who are actively undergoing treatment, those ten years in remission, and every stage in between. Matney also talks about how Yoga4Cancer is a great place to build community and fellowship with others on a similar journey.

The relaxation and stretching aspects of yoga are wonderful, and Alyson shares that many people come to these classes to strengthen their immune system as well. The movement of the body promotes lymphatic movement, respiratory, and circulatory health.
