Why Practicing Kinstretch is Essential for Joints
The founder of Above + Beyond Cancer, Dr. Richard Deming discusses the practice of Kinstretch with this week’s guest, Daniel Noyce who is a Functional Range Conditioning and Kinstretch Instructor. Dan is very familiar with how cancer can affect families and communities, his father experienced health struggles most of his life and passed recently due to multiple types of bone cancer.
Dan grew-up in Des Moines where he attended Valley High school and then went to Iowa State University to study Kinesiology. Dan discusses that as humans have evolved, activities their bodies are originally designed to do such as hunting and gathering, are being replaced. Now, humans are using exercise to compensate for their lack of movement. Dan discusses that his father’s journey has inspired him to devote his career to strength and flexibility training. He mainly focuses on Kinstretch, designed to improve your body control, flexibility, strength, and overall health of your joints.
Dan describes the ‘loss of flexibility’ as age increases is actually due to our lack of movement and natural sedentary lifestyle. Kinstretch is designed to focus on the prerequisite range of motion safely and to avoid injury. According to similar research, Kinstretch helps with mobility and fluidity, decreases injury, feeds cells in joints, and overall increases performance, balance, and range of motion. An example of practicing Kinstretch is rehearsing a secure wrist extension before safely performing a push up. Many times, secondary motions pop into play when performing a task that the individual doesn't have the prerequisite strength to complete the motion. This series of events often end in an injury.
Dan currently teaches a 12-week Kinstretch class for Above + Beyond Cancer where he encourages the class participants to independently explore their own bodies and limits. He allows individuals to track their progress and practice toward safe and healthy movement. For more, check out this conversation in detail on Above + Beyond Cancer's Youtube page.
