What is this Fuss About Urban Pole Walking?

by Mary Van Heukelom

Are you noticing more humans walking with poles and are curious what this is all about?  Studies have shown the overall benefits of Urban Pole Walking, and that it is safe for medical populations.

If you crave a wellness boost, enjoy the outdoors, and appreciate guidance from an experienced instructor, then the Above + Beyond Cancer Urban Pole Walking class would be a good fit for you.

Urban Poling, known as nordic walking, is spreading in popularity throughout central Iowa. When we properly use Urban Poles while walking, we utilize 90% of our muscles, and increase our heart rate 20-40% more than walking without poles.  Other benefits include; increased balance, improved posture, and an overall boost in endurance and confidence.

“The Urban Pole Walking class has helped me in so many ways. I have learned to walk correctly with the benefits of building my strength, endurance, posture, and core. Tanya (the Above + Beyond Cancer teacher) makes sure everyone works to their ability and individualizes for your situation. And best of all are the friendships I have made!” - Joni Livermore

Above + Beyond Cancer is a non-profit founded in 2011, with a mission to “elevate the mind, body, and spirit of patients, survivors, and caregivers throughout the cancer journey.”  We offer this evidence-based medical program for cancer survivors and caregivers in a variety of locations including the Albaugh Family Senior Community Center, Forest Avenue Library, MercyOne Health & Fitness, and  Water Works Park.

Each registrant completes a pre and post assessment to track progress and set goals. The program results are showing the difference an exercise like this can have on our overall health.

“I am 62 years old and was diagnosed four years ago with stage IV breast cancer. I have been on hormone therapy, and my cancer is currently at rest. I began pole walking on September 25 and have since lost 16 pounds. I doubled all of my skills from my pre- to post-assessments measured by Tanya. I have more energy and feel so much better overall. Reaching milestones and improving our lives feels wonderful. The friendships we make and how good we feel are truly the best parts of the class.” - Ginger
